Wow, just wow

I proposed in THIS post that William Walter Elliot was Austen’s most sociopathic character. There were other proposals, but I have to thank Lani for suggesting Lady Susan Vernon of Austen’s Lady Susan.

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!

I just have to wonder why no character as nasty ever made it into any of the six major novels of Jane Austen. Lady S. makes all the bad girls you can think of from TV look like absolute pikers.

But I’m not sure her friend, Mrs. Johnson didn’t out manoeuvre her in the end.

Give Lady Susan a try and see if she doesn’t give WWE a run for HIS money!

Take care–Susan Kaye

I’m glad you enjoyed Lady Susan. Just so you know someone has written a book about her that gives Lady Susan a favorable treatment. The blurb makes sound like she is misunderstood rather than the beowich that she is. A true sociopath can make white look black so I’m thinking she is the real deal.
I won’t be reading the book. I like that Ms. Austen created such a deliciously evil character and I don’t want to read anything that may soften my view of her.

My understanding is that charm is one of the sociopaths most effective weapons. No one can believe that anyone so nice could be so destructive. And we don’t want to believe that we can be so mislead.

In romances that’s why, IMO, we see people running to “reform” baddies. Unfortunately, this seems to translate into a lot of heartbreak in the real world.

I just saw a story on TV about a new trend in dating and a sociopath’s dream: International BLIND DATING!! What could possibly go wrong with THAT?!? Now instead of enduring a bad date in the comfort of your own home town, you can buy a plane ticket, endure the TSA, AND possibly run into a psycho on their home turf! Boy, are there stories in that.
