Fat, are you? Blame it on bacteria!

2435_woman_entertainer_in_a_wooden_egg_costume“A breath test might show it’s not your fault you’re fat,” reports Maggie Fox of NBC News.

And if you belch a lot and suffer from flatulence, you might be host to the microbe that is at fault, Methanobrevibacter smithii.

Seriously, that’s the name, I’m not making it up. Apparently M. smithii produces a lot of methane – the odorless gas responsible for burps and other inconvenient emissions. And people who produced the most methane and another gas, hydrogen, in their breath weighed more and had more body fat than people who produced the lowest amounts.

Lovely, huh? A double blessing. Happy Wednesday!

I wonder if bathing in hand sanitizer would help any. So why don’t those anti-gas tablets make you lose weight?

I take EXTRA bacteria every day to replace what my digestive system lacks. Does that mean I am making it even harder to lose weight?

Meaning the bacteria are the little guys, or M smithii in particular is little? Maybe the scientist who cooked up this theory is small. Or maybe I’m just being small when I say I doubt this whole thing.
